Before Moonset, Yaki Point

Before Moonset, Yaki Point

In order for the moon to be full, it must be on the opposite side of the earth from the sun. So, moonrise happens at sunset and moonset happens at sunrise. Two days after the full moon the moon is still in the sky when the sun is up. The sun is up high enough to reach into the canyon but hasn’t reached the Colorado River at the bottom of the gorge.

Smoke In The Valley

Smoke In The Valley

As the forest fires continue, the smoke continues to flow down the valleys creating some wild looking colours in the skies. In the foothills west of Calgary, visibility is much reduced across the Bow Valley. The sun is muted through the smoke.

Sun Beam

Sun Beam

The week I spent in the Cypress Hills with Courtney Milne was a pivotal event in my photographic life. We had our E6 film processed over night, and it was one of the first times that I had speedy feedback on my images. Unlike the digital cameras of today, you could get print film developed at a one hour photo shop, but they usually batch processed E6 every couple of days. Kodachrome had to be mailed in for processing often involving a 10 day to a 2 week wait. So, we shot every day and turned in our film every night. We got to pick up our processed slides when we got back after our dawn shooting. Then we sorted and picked a few selects for showing to the group for critique after lunch. This image was well received by the rest.

One Dog

One Dog

On a walk with the dog, the cold day Sun Dogs appeared around the sun. Although they appeared on both sides of the late afternoon sun, I captured only one with my point and shoot camera. I liked this view with the frost on the shrubs.
