Winter Comes

Winter Comes

What first appeared to be dust on a dirty negative, the tiny flecks all over this image are really large snowflakes that are falling. The bare field will soon be covered in snow.

An old vapour trail leads across the sky over the empty winter prairie.

Windmill Sunset

Windmill Sunset

Sometimes there are gems almost in your back yard. This scene is only a couple of miles from my house. Every night it plays out with different colours and light.

Eat My Dust

Eat My Dust

Every working combine is putting out it’s own cloud of dust and with the number of them working in the area, there is a thin layer of haze hanging over the entire region.

Keep Out

Keep Out

As the clock keeps ticking, there seems less to keep out of. The old building is showing it’s age, looking like it’s about to lay down. The incoming storm will only beat on it some more.

Wispy Clouds

Wispy Clouds

Clouds can have such interesting shapes and colours. Taken earlier in the summer, when things were still green.

Coulee Creek

Coulee Creek

On the Southern Alberta prairies, the hills along the rivers in the area are known as coulees. Caused by erosion over many years, they shape the land. Most are dry for most of the year, but this one has enough runoff water to support a year round watercourse. It helps keep the grasses and plants in the bottom green.

Clouds over a small pond overlook the prairie aspens as the leaves turn a golden yellow colour.

Light Show

Light Show

Recently, I read a discussion online about oversaturated images that abound on the internet. I’d just like to say, that this isn’t one of them. I didn’t go anywhere near the saturation slider. Sometimes you are presented with a scene that is amazing just in and of itself.

Sky Canvas

Sky Canvas

At sunset, the sun can turn the sky into a work of art. Using the clouds as it’s canvas, the sun paints on brilliant colours for your eyes to soak in. Hot yellows, oranges and reds meld with cooler blues, purples and magentas for an evening spectacle.

Cloud Play

Cloud Play

Sometimes on a lazy summer afternoon, all you need is an open prairie and a few clouds. Cloud watching is an enjoyable way to spend a late summer day.

The Opening

The Opening

I really do like the sky and clouds. Anyone who has followed my photography knows they are featured prominently in my photography. The sky is always there when you’re outside, and often there are clouds present, so if you look up, there’s a good chance there is something to photograph. I try to find something different, and unusual formation or striking colours, but sometimes it’s just a peaceful pastoral scene.

Prairie Sunset

This week I’m sharing some of the spectacular sunsets that this area has to offer. A simple orange glow on the horizon.

Stormy Afternoon

Stormy Afternoon

Just around sunset, the rays highlight any clouds in the area. Often, the sun will have warmer tones when passing through atmospheric particles.

Storm In A Pond

Storm In A Pond

I always look for the reflection in the water. This time, the approaching storm came into view. With the toadflax in the foreground, I thought it made a uniquely prairie composition.

Simple Sunset

Simple Sunset

I have been wanting to bring more simplicity into my work, and I thought this composition is close to what I was thinking of.

Storm Textures

Storm Textures

Looking into a storm cloud, I could see where the action was happening. The cloud was roiling in the middle, the edges looked like rough feathers. The new crop below seemed dark in the dimming light.

Copse Shower

Copse Shower

On our way home from somewhere, often, we take the long way around. This time, we headed into the countryside chasing after a storm cloud. The sun had peeked out and the light gave the layers definition. Behind the cloud, the setting sun painted the sky golden. When the streamers from precipitation lined up with the small grove of trees, I got my shot.

Burning Through Fog

Burning Through Fog

I had been watching a layer of fog on my way home one morning but was waiting for more light to get a shot. When the sun came through the fog dissipated quickly.
