Building A Head Of Steam

Build A Head Of Steam

These old steam tractors are some of my favourite pieces of machinery. Standing next to one you can feel the power and the potential. I wanted to make the motion of the piston and flywheel visible, so I used a shutter speed of 1/30th of a second to get just a little bit of blur in the moving parts while keeping the boiler sharp on a handheld shot. I hadn’t noticed the dust spots on the lens and didn’t want to try to clean them all up, so I decided to leave them in and go for a more old timey image.

Old Canadian Kenworth

Old Canadian KW

I’m not sure the exact year of this old Kenworth truck but I would place it from the 1960’s. Unfortunately he was just leaving as I showed up. The cue that you can’t see is the narrow grille. Some that you can see are the butterfly opening hood and the integrated fender fuel tank.

Grey Horse Portrait

There are some times when you just make a connection with an animal. In this case, a horse looks you in the eye and acknowledges you. All I can do is take it’s picture and capture the moment.

Four Horse Power

Four Horse Power

This four horse team of greys had two that were nearly white and two darker horses. This team was waiting patiently in line to parade the cultivator and packer in front of the grandstands. Taken at the annual Reunion at Pioneer Acres in Irricana, Alberta.

Cars from the late 1950’s and early 1960’s carry a certain fascination for me. I really like the body lines and styling which is unlike anything modern cars have to offer. Buicks with their cowl mounted port holes and this one with it’s jet exhaust style tail lights, symbolize, for me, the best of Detroit at it’s finest. Taken at this year’s Reunion at Pioneer Acres in Irricana, AB.
