Industrial Light

Industrial Light

With a tongue in cheek nod to George Lucas, this black and white study is of the fertilizer plant near Carseland, Alberta. Most of the billowing clouds are steam in the sub zero temperatures.

Dusk Dust

Dusk Dust

One of Carlson Ag’s combines is working through it’s own dust cloud. The dust is filtering the light of the setting sun, creating soft warm tones.

After rain and snow, the combines are back in the fields near Didsbury. One of eight combines working for Carlson Ag.

Wispy Clouds

Wispy Clouds

Clouds can have such interesting shapes and colours. Taken earlier in the summer, when things were still green.

Coulee Creek

Coulee Creek

On the Southern Alberta prairies, the hills along the rivers in the area are known as coulees. Caused by erosion over many years, they shape the land. Most are dry for most of the year, but this one has enough runoff water to support a year round watercourse. It helps keep the grasses and plants in the bottom green.

Clouds over a small pond overlook the prairie aspens as the leaves turn a golden yellow colour.

Light Show

Light Show

Recently, I read a discussion online about oversaturated images that abound on the internet. I’d just like to say, that this isn’t one of them. I didn’t go anywhere near the saturation slider. Sometimes you are presented with a scene that is amazing just in and of itself.

Sky Canvas

Sky Canvas

At sunset, the sun can turn the sky into a work of art. Using the clouds as it’s canvas, the sun paints on brilliant colours for your eyes to soak in. Hot yellows, oranges and reds meld with cooler blues, purples and magentas for an evening spectacle.

Cloud Play

Cloud Play

Sometimes on a lazy summer afternoon, all you need is an open prairie and a few clouds. Cloud watching is an enjoyable way to spend a late summer day.

Town Aurora

Town Aurora

On my way home one morning, I could see the northern lights in the sky. The aurora stretched across the northern horizon as I was driving. By the time I got home to get my camera, the lights were already fading, so, I set up on my front sidewalk and shot across the street. What I couldn’t see when driving was the radiating pulsing in the lights. Unfortunately you can’t capture the movement in still photography.

Sunset Rain

Sunset Rain

The dying light of the day often creates the most dramatic scenes. A lemon yellow sky and very contrasty clouds were my view this night.

River Morning

River Morning

Sometimes you break a few rules, but I don’t take photography “rules” very seriously. To me, they are more like suggestions. In no particular order, “you don’t split the frame in half with the horizon”, except if you like it that way. The whole image has a blue cast which some might want to correct. At another time I might have wanted to as well, but it was as I saw it. The image seems soft. This was caused by a haze in the air, which contributed to the blue cast as well. I did like the soft focus look so, I kept that as well.

The scene is over looking the Red Deer River Valley from Dry Island Buffalo Jump near Trochu, Alberta.

Storm In A Pond

Storm In A Pond

I always look for the reflection in the water. This time, the approaching storm came into view. With the toadflax in the foreground, I thought it made a uniquely prairie composition.

Simple Sunset

Simple Sunset

I have been wanting to bring more simplicity into my work, and I thought this composition is close to what I was thinking of.

New Canola Blossoms

New Canola Blossoms

When the flowers come out in the canola fields, they start looking rough and spotty. Within a week to ten days this field will be a solid mass of yellow. The undulations in the field show in areas slower to bloom.

Strange Clouds

Strange Clouds

In a land with a lot of sky, I have a fascination with watching the sky. Weather and clouds interest me. The sun is directly behind this cloud and it gave the formation a different look.

Sundown

Sundown

Sometime the clouds are all in the right place to catch the golden light from the sunset, and it looks like the sky is on fire.

Aperture

Aperture

The sun is quite capable of finding the smallest openings in the cloud cover. The light was fading in the evening when a hole in the clouds lit up, making everything brighter.

Ominous

Ominous

When dark clouds like this roll in and their bottoms start to distend, you know it’s going to get really wet soon. It was a cloudy bright day when we went to Red Deer, on our way home, we gave up the idea of doing yard work when we saw this.
