Herbert Lake

Herbert Lake

When you turn north from Lake Louise on the Icefields Parkway one of the first turnoffs is to the lesser known Herbert Lake. This little gem is a great spot.

Fresh Snow

Fresh Snow

I love the look of clean, fresh, untrammelled snow. Being in the mountains makes the experience even better. Shooting into the sun, with the low hanging clouds, cranks up the contrast to the max.

Leaning Tree

Leaning Tree

The high runoff in the spring raises the water level and increases the erosion and undermines the trees on the edge. When there is no longer enough soil to support the roots, gravity takes hold and pulls the tree over.

Water Flow

Water Flow

From a couple of years ago, just off of the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper. I had tried for a longer shutter speed to smooth out the water, and wish I was able to make an exposure at an even longer exposure, to make the water even smoother.

I do remember a great day in the mountains with a great view.

Mancos Valley From 7875ft

The road to Mesa Verde National Park leaves the valley floor near Mancos, Colorado and just goes up. There is a view point just before the highway turns inland towards the mesa top. This is part of what you can see from the viewpoint. Like the title says, we are at 7875’ elevation. The near ridge on the right is about 3 miles away and the snow capped peaks on the left are twenty miles distant. The air was cold and the wind brisk but invigorating. A great way to start a visit to another fantastic National Park.
