Abraham Bubbles

Abraham Bubbles

Photography is often a work in progress. As you develop your skills and learn new techniques your images can improve in quality and expressiveness. This is an interim copy of this scene that I’ve been working on in the past weeks. I’ve made some changes to my workflow and am implementing more features in Photoshop itself.

This is an image of Abraham Lake, east of the Saskatchewan River Crossing just outside of Banff National Park. It is well known for the methane bubbles that form in the ice on the surface of the lake.

Thin Ice

Thin Ice

Wherever you have moving water in the winter in this area, the temperature fluctuations affect the water flow. The resulting drop in water level creates passages under the snow and ice caps, revealing small alcoves and grottoes. The lowered stream fell below the previously formed ice and created a knife edge.

Frozen In Time

Frozen In Time

The weather has turned cold enough to freeze the shallow ponds of the foothills and prairies. This one had a bit of open water in the middle. The grasses have stopped growing for the season and are now frozen in place. The location that was once teaming with life is now still with only the sound of the wind to keep you company. The aquatic birds have headed south and the once vocal frogs are in hibernation. On this day there was just the wind, the ice and me.

Ice Road Sunset

Ice Road Sunset

I saw some of the most amazing sunsets and sunrises in the Northwest Territories. The sun is not very high in the sky at this time of year and the low angle gives you a long time to see the sun come up or go down.  Shades of pink and ochre transition to azure and deep blue in the clear cold evening. As I recall it was about –25º Celsius when the exposure was made.

Morning Skyline

Morning Skyline

When you are travelling on a frozen lake the landscape is basically flat. On the land there are low hills and ridges that vary as you move along. The light is amazingly subtle in the north, with pastel shades coloring the sky.
