Frozen In Time

Frozen In Time

Caught in the grip of winter, these grasses are on the edge of a prairie pond near Madden, AB. Taking the long way home is often a source for many of my images. The back roads are mostly less travelled and allow you to pull over to take a picture.

Afternoon Clouds

Afternoon Clouds

Summer is a great time for evening drives. With the weather getting colder, looking at a picture like this helps warm me up. I don’t remember now if the haze in the distance was dust from the gravel roads or mist after a passing storm. The colours are warm and brilliant in the late afternoon sun.

Frozen In Time

The weather has turned cold enough to freeze the shallow ponds of the foothills and prairies. This one had a bit of open water in the middle. The grasses have stopped growing for the season and are now frozen in place. The location that was once teaming with life is now still with only the sound of the wind to keep you company. The aquatic birds have headed south and the once vocal frogs are in hibernation. On this day there was just the wind, the ice and me.

Morning Grasses

Morning Grasses

Another image from the archive, this was taken on a morning photo shoot with my brother in law Richard at Kathryn Albertson Park, in Boise, Idaho. The early light was exceptional and the backlighting opportunities were everywhere.

Wind Blown Grass

Wind Blown Grass

With the wind blowing down the river on the day of the Worldwide Photo Walk in Calgary, Kensington, it made me wonder how to show the movement from the breeze. So, I set the ISO to the lowest setting and cranked the aperture down to the smallest opening f/22, which gave me a shutter speed of 1/30th of a second. This was enough to catch the grass heads doing the dip.
