Into The Night

Into The Night

As the sky darkens and the harvest moon rises higher, the farmer works on into the night, racing against time to bring his crops in.

The harvest moon hangs over a freshly cut field of grain.

Harvest Ready

Harvest Ready

Travelling around the countryside, you see fields in various states of ripeness. This one was one of the first we saw that seemed to be fully ripened.

Golden Fields

Golden Fields

Evenings have a wonderful light quality. With the sun raking across the field, the contrast is enhanced.

Canola Sunset

Canola Sunset

By the time we got out this night, it was almost too dark. The brilliance of the yellow by day is now quite muted.

Hazy Evening

Hazy Evening

Just after the sun sets there is a short period where there is enough light and enough color to get a great picture. The muted tones are suitable for the feelings here. A warm breeze on a summers evening and the scene is set.

Frosty Day

Frosty Day

On a crisp bright day, the frost can turn the landscape magical.  Sometimes it’s enough just to view a part of it. Longer grasses and weeds are at the edge of a field of stubble near Milo, Alberta. The light burning through the cloud cover makes it look warm.

Edge Of The Field

Edge Of The Field

On a field with low wet spots, the machinery has to go around them or risk getting stuck in the mud. It does create interesting patterns in the fields.

I converted this image to monochrome to highlight the different lines and contrasts in the crop.

Off In A Cloud Of Dust

Off In A Cloud of Dust

On this day of Canadian Thanksgiving, one of the things I’m thankful for are the farmers and ranchers who are working to put food on our tables. The canola being combined here, goes to be extracted for canola oil and the left over meal is used as a livestock feed.

A few adjustments in Lightroom and Photoshop, with Nik Analog Efex used sparingly.

To The Horizon

To The Horizon

The working combine is a sentinel providing food for our nation, our world. In this image, I hoped to convey the vastness of the prairies and the wide open skies. By converting to a toned monochrome, it focuses on the lines, layers and depth.

Sunset And Water

Sunset And Water 7

Looking back on some of my older images, I thought I would share a few that stand out.

After a very rainy spring a nearby field was partly flooded. I liked the reflection of the sunset in the water.

Mount Dennis reflects in a small pond beside the baseball diamond in Field, BC, next to the Kicking Horse River.

Boats

Boats

I’ve been going over a few older images this week and processing them. Some had been done before, this one had not been previously posted. I liked the repetitive shapes and lines. I also found the names of the boats interesting. Can you identify the sources for the names?

Fog On The Flats

Fog On The Flats

I don’t know if it is fog or just low clouds but it was hanging over the Kicking Horse Valley near Field, BC in Yoho National Park, but it sure looked interesting.

Mt. Ogden In The Mist

Mt. Ogden In The Mist

The fall brings bright colors to the foliage and interesting weather. The clouds and fog roll in on Mt Ogden on the right, but I know, up the valley lies Takkakaw Falls and the road usually closes in October, and another summer has passed without a trip up the valley, through the switch backed roads and up the side of the mountain to Canada’s second highest waterfall. More planning for next year.

Lone Pine

Lone Pine

I was hoping for a nice reflection of the tree in the water but the wind rippled the surface of the lake. The blue of Emerald Lake shows up nicely in the ripples, whereas the yellow in the slope reflects in the the calmer portion.

Snow Road

Snow Road

With spring seemingly just around the corner, a last glimpse of winter might hurry it on it’s way. Soon the frozen over Kicking Horse River will be released from an icy grip, and the melting snow pack will end the threat of avalanches.

Mount Stephen

The sun is almost behind Mount Burgess, across the Kicking Horse River valley, leaving a strip of light along the edge. I liked the bit of a pink tinge to the clouds.

“My first thought is always of light” Galen Rowell

Please forgive the obvious reference to the late great Galen Rowell. Back in the 1980’s when I was trying to get serious about my photography, I would see his name in nearly every magazine that I picked up. It made me pay attention to what he was doing. And what he was doing was paying attention to the light.

I spotted this saddle in the Ottertail Range in Yoho National Park near Field, British Columbia. The afternoon light brushed across the contours, casting deep shadows in the crags.

Canola And Trees

Canola And Trees

I find the best shots on afternoon drives. We were on our way shopping and I decided to take the back road to the store. The light was great and the rain was falling behind the scene that I was photographing. The flowering canola fields in this area are always great subjects for your pictures. I liked the hint of contour in the field with the varied coloration of the blossoms.

Deer Fields

Deer Fields

Driving around on the back roads is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon, but also a great source of material. We were motoring down a gravel road when we saw this doe standing on the edge of a small valley. I stopped the truck, rolled down the window and snapped a few quick shots. This is the one I liked the most. I find opportunistic the most common for me. I shoot pictures of what I come across.

Kicking Horse Flats

Kicking Horse Flats

The rain storm to the west of Field, BC in Yoho National Park heads for the Alberta border. The sun catches the edge of Mount Stephen on the right and Mount Field in the distance.

Near Ottertail

Near Ottertail

I thought that the Trans Canada Highway west of Field, BC in Yoho National Park made a great leading line. The rain storm further up the Kicking Horse Valley left streamers coming down over the town.

Just A Bit Of Light

Mount Stephen

Scenic images are not always the greatest on overcast days. Some times you do get lucky and a bit of sun peeks through and you get nice light on what ever you are viewing. Don’t wait because the light will probably change fast and you will miss it if you don’t hurry. With the precipitation that we have been getting recently, I imagine that Kicking Horse Flats near Field, BC is now full of runoff from edge to edge.
