Broken Feed Drive

Broken Feed Drive

The drive chain that runs the feeder on the combine pickup broke and jammed the front full. Under the flood lights from the combine and work lights from the service truck, the canola was brightly light in the darkening night.

Here Comes The Cart

Here Comes The Cart

The combine Is almost ready to unload, the operator has the auger swung out to empty the grain tank. The grain cart operator is coming across the field to take the crop from the combine. After emptying several combines, the cart will unload into the semi-trailer truck waiting near the driveway to the field.

Four Combines

Four Combines

I was trying to find a shot where all of combines were lined up in a row, but the field was too short and there were always machines going both directions. I did manage this frame with four in the viewfinder.

Racing Daylight

Racing Daylight

As the sun reaches towards the horizon, the combine races across the field. It hurries to bring in the crop, in this case, canola. The Carlson Ag crew will work late into the night tonight, but the moisture content will rise after the sun sets. So, getting the dry harvest off is important.

Canola flowers wave in the evening light, as the sunset goes on in the background.

Canola Sunset

Canola Sunset

By the time we got out this night, it was almost too dark. The brilliance of the yellow by day is now quite muted.

Distant Canola

Distant Canola

A bit of sunlight brightens canola in a far away field. Ruffled clouds threaten.

New Canola Blossoms

New Canola Blossoms

When the flowers come out in the canola fields, they start looking rough and spotty. Within a week to ten days this field will be a solid mass of yellow. The undulations in the field show in areas slower to bloom.

Night Unload

Night Unload

Lights are shining brightly as the combines make their way around fields. The truck has all of it’s lights on so the combine operators know where to go to unload the harvest. It is trickier at night to get the auger aligned properly, depth perception changes in the dark. The driver is out checking the suspension gauges so he’s not over the legal weight.

Last Field, Last Load

Off In A Cloud Of Dust

Off In A Cloud of Dust

On this day of Canadian Thanksgiving, one of the things I’m thankful for are the farmers and ranchers who are working to put food on our tables. The canola being combined here, goes to be extracted for canola oil and the left over meal is used as a livestock feed.

A few adjustments in Lightroom and Photoshop, with Nik Analog Efex used sparingly.

Dust Glow

Dust Glow

Farmers often harvest late into the night, but I find the late afternoon can be the most picturesque. In this canola field, the dry stalks and husks are chopped fine and sprayed out behind to be reincorporated to the soil. The strong backlighting caused the bright areas to be a little overblown but still in keeping with the feel of the scene. The sun approaching the horizon nicely added the warm golden coloured light, capturing the feel of the warm autumn.

To The Horizon

To The Horizon

The working combine is a sentinel providing food for our nation, our world. In this image, I hoped to convey the vastness of the prairies and the wide open skies. By converting to a toned monochrome, it focuses on the lines, layers and depth.

Canola And Trees

Canola And Trees

I find the best shots on afternoon drives. We were on our way shopping and I decided to take the back road to the store. The light was great and the rain was falling behind the scene that I was photographing. The flowering canola fields in this area are always great subjects for your pictures. I liked the hint of contour in the field with the varied coloration of the blossoms.

Dealing With Obstructions

The Old House

I loved the look of this old cabin in the middle of a canola field but there was a strip of tall thistles around the field.

Dreams Of Yellow

One of my favorite local pursuits is to shoot the brilliant color of the canola in bloom.
