Town Aurora

Town Aurora

On my way home one morning, I could see the northern lights in the sky. The aurora stretched across the northern horizon as I was driving. By the time I got home to get my camera, the lights were already fading, so, I set up on my front sidewalk and shot across the street. What I couldn’t see when driving was the radiating pulsing in the lights. Unfortunately you can’t capture the movement in still photography.

Omega

Omega

I thought this looked like the Greek letter Omega, the last letter, kind of symbolizing the end. It was the end of our night out but the show continued on much later into the night.

The Claw

This one just looked like a big claw coming down from the sky.

All A Buzz

All A Buzz

There are times when the aurora gets really active and it starts moving around quickly. You never know what you’ll end up with in the camera. In this shot, it was different from when I clicked the shutter until when the exposure ended.

Light Bright

Light Bright

It’s been a bit of an Aurora drought around here lately, so please forgive me if I gush on about the G3 storm that occurred early on May 8th. The lights were so bright, we could see them before we left town. I didn’t have to worry about finding the absolute darkest site to shoot from either. There was enough light to illuminate the ground so minimal flashlights were used. My major worry was where to point my camera next. From about 20 degrees above the southern horizon the rest of the sky had aurora at some point in the night. You had to be there!
