Foothills Roundup

Foothills Roundup

The fall is a beautiful time in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. In certain areas, ranching is still prominent. If you are lucky, you may get to see an actual cattle drive in progress. I liked the lines in the hills and the triangles that they created.

Herd And Storm

Herd And Storm

The cows have let the new calves wander off on their own, seemingly unaware of the impending storm. Wisps of rain are coming down in the background.

Little Black Calf

Little Black Calf

When you visit a farm in the afternoon, everyone is calm and most of the animals are laying down. This little black calf was no exception. It watched as I approached but stayed where it was, allowing me to get this excellent shot.

On a side note, when I checked the back of the camera, many of the frames were looking overexposed. I had been using spot metering for precise exposures in certain situations. This time it backfired on me. The camera saw the black, thought it was too dark and adjusted the exposure to be brighter, causing overexposed images. I changed to center-weighted metering and got properly exposed pictures.

Red Cow

Red Cow

The old red cow naps in the sun, possibly dreaming of the day when her calf will finally be born. I liked the out of focus trees as a framing device. They sort of lead the eyes up a path to the subject.

I haven’t been getting out shooting much lately, so I dived into the archive to look for gems that I previously passed over. I found this shot of the cat which looked crooked. After straightening the frame and making it pop just a little, I thought it turned out well.
