Model A Temperature Gauge

Temperature Gauge

On a Ford Model A, the radiator cap was also the hood ornament, this in turn was optionally the temperature gauge. I found this out when working with a friend of mine, helping him restore his Model A. The mechanism is quite simple, a thermometer goes down the hood ornament into the coolant, where it reports the temperature. There is a scale on the driver’s side to show the actual reading. When the thermometer reaches the window opening, the heat is in the high range. The wings on the side are not just ornamental, they also help provide leverage when loosening the rad cap.
