Deconstructing The White Wolf

White Wolf

Well, not deconstructing an actual wolf but rather how I came to finish off this image.

The original RAW file is quite contrasty, with deep shadows and the white fur behind and below the ear blown out with no detail. The face is also a bit dark.

Straight out of Photomatix the single image HDR looks flat. There is also some what of a warm cast over the whole picture.

I edited the .tif file from Photomatix in Nikon Capture NX2 saving it as a .nef file to retain my edits. I first cooled the color tone to try to match the original RAW file. I put back in some of the contrast and selectively brightened the face, especially the eye. I also brightened and saturated the tongue to make sure that it stood out. I finished the image by selectively sharpening the face and head.

In the best light…
