Photography and commentary from John Fujimagari



Often when you are at a zoo, the backgrounds are not the best, and cages can get in the way. The American Bison (bison bison) enclosure at the Calgary Zoo has a heavy gauge wire fencing and metal bars surrounding it.

My friend Mike Fitton attempts to shoot through the fencing. I used a telephoto lens to get close to the subject. I knew the background snow would get blown out but I wanted to retain the detail in the face of the animal. I managed to keep the eye very sharp and caught a nice reflection. The tight crop doesn’t show much of the buffalo, although I think the face is instantly recognisable.

    Your shot of the Bison turned out great Fuji 🙂 I never could get that proper angle/cage/post image I was trying to get…!
