On Saturday afternoon those lucky enough to have seats at Dave Brosha’s Mastering Environmental Light Seminar in Cochrane were treated to simple techniques to improve your photography.

The seminar was hosted by Samantha Chrysanthou and Darwin Wiggett, and their Oopoomoo website. This was the second of six talks offered so far this year. Dave started the talk with his process for creating environmental portraits that pop! This was followed by a slideshow of Dave’s images, many that I remember when they came out after each of the photo shoots.

After the break, Dave set up a live shoot with model, Talyn Stone. Talyn is a very talented model who responded to Dave’s suggestions with interesting and photogenic poses. Darwin even got into modeling doing a few poses with Talyn. (bottom photo) That drew laughs from the audience. All in all it was an educative event, for me photographically refreshing and inspiring.

A simple image of winter creek details. I deliberately chose a very slow shutter speed to blur the moving water. I used a tight crop to show off the fine features of the small stream that runs across the Icefields Parkway north of Lake Louise, Alberta.

A quick image of a sunset at Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park near Cochrane, Alberta.

The setting sun lights up a small section of the Bow River as it winds it’s way past the park. The setting sun highlights the profile of the Rocky Mountains to the west.

After an excellent talk on photographing Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, hosted by oopoomoo.com, the website of Samantha Chrysanthou and Darwin Wiggett, on Saturday afternoon; I thought I’d post another image from the park.

Pastel cloud show different colors at different altitudes near sunset. I shot wide to get more in the frame and pushed the horizon further to the bottom to include even more sky.

We are back to our outing at Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park near Cochrane, Alberta. As with Monday’s post “Fence Lines” the landform is the major subject in the frame. This time there is a prominent S curve traversing the hill, and the full moon. I was able to underexpose the frame enough to retain some detail in the full moon. This created a more moody scene with the farm buildings on the hill and the dark sky behind them. You can barely see the wispy clouds with a tint of color from the setting sun.

I found this view looking down the line of the fence line. I thought the vertical line along with all of the  horizontal and diagonal lines, and the nice curve came together to make a nice composition.

So, I’m standing there looking at all of the nice lines and angles, hanging on to my tripod and taking my pictures. What I don’t notice, until I get the image on my computer screen, is the herd of deer from further up the hill earlier in the evening (they are about halfway up on the right hand side of the frame). So I guess they were really still or I was totally focused on the fences.

Do you get so engrossed with your photography that you fail to notice some details?

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 12,000 times in 2011. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 4 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

In Monday’s post, Shades of Blue, we saw the entire scene blue in the shade with the sun behind the cloud. A little later, the sun came out from hiding and cast a beautiful shaft of light across the mountain face. The brilliant sunlight created a warmth in just a small section of the image. I liked the contrast of color temperatures.

Shooting in the shade tends toward a blue cast in your photographs. With the sun behind the cloud, it turned the whole scene blue. I did very little post processing to retain the overall blue tone. Colors can often convey mood through your imagery.
